Los Angeles City Hall, 1955

Los Angeles City Hall - 1955It’s hard to imagine the LA skyline without our iconic City Hall. (TV’s Superman wouldn’t have his Daily Planet building!) For many years, it was the tallest structure in LA, which is why it dominated views of downtown. But when photographed like this (at dawn, I suspect) it’s not hard to see how film noir took advantage of it. Its blazing lights and inky shadows reek of mystery.
