Film & television producer Tabrez Noorani options Hollywood’s “Garden of Allah” novels by Martin Turnbull

The Garden of Allah Hotel may rise again!

I am very excited to announce that my Hollywood’s Garden of Allah novels:

have been optioned by a producer with a substantial list of film and television credits.

The Garden of Allah novels - coming to a screen near you soon...????Not long after I conceived the central idea behind the Garden of Allah novels – to tell the story of the history of Hollywood through the eyes of the (fictional and real) people who lived, loved and played at one of its most legendary hotels, the Garden of Allah – I could see that it readily lent itself to being the basis for a TV series. I’ve been approached a couple of times before by people interested in developing the idea, but nothing much came of it.

This new producer, however, is very into old Hollywood, the movies, the stars, the studio system, and feels – as I do – that the time is right to launch the Garden of Allah’s story onto either the movie or television screen.

His name is Tabrez Noorani and together with his producing partner, Deepak Nayar, have been on the producing teams of:

  • Bend It Like Beckham
  • Bride and Prejudice
  • Slumdog Millionaire
  • Eat, Pray, Love
  • The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
  • Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol
  • Paranoia
  • Vampire Academy
  • Life of Pi
  • Zero Dark Thirty
  • Million Dollar Arm
  • The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel 2

Bringing novels to the large or small screen is generally a long process which could take years to develop, but a first step has been taken. Who knows where it might lead?

You can read the exclusive announcement on The Hollywood Reporter website.

Or here on my website.

Meanwhile, may the fantasy casting games begin!

  1. Jeff Linder says:

Congratulations Martin!! I’ve read all three books and am eagerly anticipating the 4th! Before I was half way through the first book I thought the books make a great TV series! I too am passionate about “old Hollywood”, the birth of the movies, the studio system, etc. and have devoured I don’t know how many books, both fiction and non-fiction, on the subject. Can’t wait to see Marcus, Kathryn, and Gwendolyn on the screen!! Again, Congratulation and Best of Luck!!!

  2. Russ Taylor says:

Just finished the 4th book and loved it just as much as the first three. Can’t wait for the next two to come out. I would love to see a TV series or movie done.

    • Thanks Russ! I’m glad you enjoyed all four of my books – even enough to take the time to tell me. Yes, my fingers are crossed that a TV series will happen. I think this story lends itself to the screen so easily…so we’ll see!

  3. Kimberly Walker says:

I plowed through the first three books and am into the fourth in no time. I find the stories completely engaging, the locations charming and the real people fascinating! Every time I think wait, was that character real, I check and sure enough, they were. I have learned so much about the history. I can’t wait to read book five (there will be a book five, right?) and the thought of these as a tv series, miniseries or movie is so exciting! Thank you, Mr. Turnbull for your expertise!

    • Hello Kimberly, Thank you so much for taking the time to tell me how much you’ve been enjoying my books. Yes! There is book five in the works! And yes! A TV series based on my books would, indeed, be very exciting!

  4. Marcie Grover says:

Hi Martin, I just wanted to say how much I enjoy the Garden of Allah books (I’m re-reading them all right now). I’ve always wondered what it would be like to be a part of the Golden Age of Hollywood as a working class schmo, and your books really fill in the blanks. I can’t wait for the next installment and hopefully the TV series. Well done, sir.

  5. Son Pfeifer says:

    Hi Martin
Just wanted you to know how much I enjoyed ALL the books.
They are my new favorites, up there with Armistead Maupins series.I work in LA during the week and travel home to SF on Friday’s but my office is on Sunset and I drive past the original Allahs location every day. I even lived on Havenhurst a few years back!
Please give your grateful readers’ more to enjoy soon. I hope you have something new out in the near future. Congratulations and fingers crossed for your stories making it to the big screen!

It will be very exciting to see them come to life. The best part of reading on a kindle is being able to pop out and go to TCM and check out if some of the people were real or not. Also looking up someone I didn’t know much about. I’m hoping there will be another book after Reds. Anxiously awaiting the next one

  7. Glenn Creel says:

Martin, Loved your books! I binge read them in less than a week. Great character development, not my typical reading but you have me hooked. I cannot wait for the 7th book. congrats

    • Hey Glenn…what??? You read all six books in one week? That’s pretty much a book a day! Well, that IS very flattering and I’m very glad to hear you enjoyed them so much. Book 7 is due out in June 2017 – sorry to have to make you wait so long!

just began the new book. 4 chapters standing at the mailbox! quite a spell you cast. L.B. Mayer caught off guard? the old Cobra, himself? WOW! Great Work! I keep suggesting to TCM that you, Martin, be invited to be a guest programmer?

    • Hi there, Bill. 4 chapters standing at the mailbox??? That must be a new record! Yes, the old cobra was caught off guard, but Kathryn to the rescue. I’m glad you’re enjoying “Tinseltown Confidential” so much! Me on TCM as a guest programmer? Wouldn’t that be something!
