This is the area known as Century City but back in 1924, when this photo was taken, it was still a brand new development with only a handful of homes scattered among the freshly laid roads. That’s Pico Blvd near the bottom of the photo with Wilshire Blvd running along the top with all that vacant land laying to the north of it. A few years later, 20th Century-Fox studios would become the central draw for this area.

This recent satellite image is how that area looks these days. Every square inch is filled in.

So much going on in this photo taken during the premiere 20th Century-Fox’s first CinemaScope film, “The Robe” ahead of a 13-week run. In addition to the searchlights and electric banner across Grauman’s Chinese, we can glimpse the Hollywood Hotel in the shadows, and past it, the tower of the First National Bank building. And on the right we can see a huge sign for The London Store, which was a mini chain of a chain of upscale menswear. And in the foreground is something I don’t recall seeing before: a drug store called Roosevelt on the Hollywood Blvd/Orange Dr. corner opposite the Roosevelt Hotel from which this photo would have been taken.

Everett E. says: “The Robe” was the first CinemaScope movie released. It was partially the brainchild of Spyros Skouras, head of production at 20th Century Fox. It has been referred to as the ‘poor man’s wide screen process’ because instead of using 70mm wide format film, this process was achieved using the standard 35mm film stock. It saved the theaters from having to invest in 70mm projectors. The camera was outfitted with an anamorphic lens that was wide angle and ‘squeezed’ a larger field of view onto a 35mm frame. All the theaters had to do was buy a lens that would squeeze the image back out to normal proportions allowing for a wide aspect ratio. The process was impressive in its efficiency but quite often the image showed signs of distortion, especially on the edges of the frame. Straight lines were nearly impossible as the extreme wide angle lenses exhibited varying degrees of concave ‘barrel’ distortion. It was popular because it was cheaper to exhibit than a true 70mm configuration like Todd-AO.”

You can see the drugstore is the last in the line of storefronts:

This is roughly the same view in May 2022. It looks like Hollywood Blvd was blocked off that day, too—probably for another big movie premiere. And that Roosevelt drug store is now a Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf café.

A dozen years later, it had an impressive and sprawling backlot—and the talkies had barely even begun. Within a few years, William Fox would be broke and merge with Darryl Zanuck’s 20th Century Pictures. Meanwhile, maybe some of those oil wells can bring in some extra cash.

The eastern section was the Wolfskill Oil field, and by 1928 it was also the 18-hole Westwood Hills Public golf course, and a 9-hole pitch and putt. The photo is looking south from the main entrance on Santa Monica Blvd. The wall was painted with murals of movies and stars. The road is roughly in line with the entrance on Pico. 100 feer east of Club View. Behind is Hillcrest CC and the old Rancho GC on Pico. Fox sold the land in 1961 and leased back the 80 acres they are still using. There is a lot lot more to the story.”

This is how that studio looked in January 2020. A little more crowded now, isn’t it?

Four on-board generators were needed to keep it all lit, but that was only allowed when the tank was empty! Because, yeah, your promo truck blowing up doesn’t make for good PR.

All those vivid awnings would have been hard to miss. The movie had a star-studded premiere on August 31, 1951 ahead of a 4-week run. Those PR guys sure earned their keep that month. The movie was a huge success, earning twice its budget and becoming the 3rd highest grossing picture of 1951. See what 20-foot Technicolor cut-outs can do?

As we can see, the crowds packed the sidewalks of both sides of the street, and a string of 12 valet parkers are lined up outside the front waiting for the stream of VIP cars that I imagine snaked along Hollywood Blvd for miles.

Casey W. said: “But, back then, Wednesday was the day new movies came to theaters to run for the week. But yes, it does seem odd that a major premier would be staged on an ordinary day.”

Casey also said: “The post-production for Cleopatra was a boon for studio musicians and non-studio musicians in L.A. at the time. My dad got plenty of work doing the music for the movie, but then he would have anyway–dad played bass in just about every Twentieth Century movie, (and every one scored by Alex North) except those with exclusively jazz scores. The orchestra for Cleopatra was huge, and many musicians at the periphery of the motion picture industry worked on it, particularly percussionists. I remember my kettle drum lessons were cancelled because Bob Kraft, my instructor, along with every other top-notch percussionist in L.A., was busy recording the score for Cleopatra’s entry into Rome.”

This is how the Pantages looked in June 2021. Not too different from 58 years before. Even the Frolic Room looks exactly the same!

After a splashy premiere on April 2, 1954, 20th Century-Fox’s “Prince Valiant” enjoyed a respectable 5-week run at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre (in spite of Robert Wagner’s ridiculously embarrassing pageboy haircut.) As with all CinemaScope productions, it treated passers-by with a colorful neon marquee in which “CinemaScope” was bigger than the movie’s title.

This was the Fox Theatre at 300 Diamond St in Redondo Beach. “The Eddie Duchin Story” starring Tyrone Power came out in June 1956, and “Pillars of the Sky” starring Jeff Chandler came out in October of that year, so this was probably taken late 1956. Note that fancy scroll work above the marquee, and that huge (what looks to be a) mermaid (mosaic?) that I bet was colorful in real life.

The theater came down in 1973 and in its place is now a liquor store. This image is from July 2022.

The sign and that lovely ornamental tower (is that what you’d call?) heralded the original entrances to the studio. Fox Studios are still there, although vastly different from how they were when this photo was taken, but unfortunately the sign nor the tower are a distant memory. But I bet that sign was a sight to see when lit up at night.

Here’s an earlier photo of an earlier sign. (My thanks to Martin Pal for sending this one to me.)

The main street at the bottom, where the grand gates are, is Santa Monica Blvd. William Fox founded his studio in 1915 on what had been a 200-acre ranch, and called his backlot “Movietone City.” This shot is from 1928 and as we can see, the neighboring land was still pumping oil!

Here is another aerial photo of the studio looking north from Pico Blvd in 1930. These days, the main gate into the studio is on Pico.

Mr. Fox went through very hard times during the Depression and in 1935 merged with another studio to become 20th Century-Fox.
