<p>On February 29, 1940 (a Leap Year Day!), the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences held the 12<sup>th</sup> Academy Awards presentation at the Cocoanut Grove nightclub at the Ambassador Hotel on Wilshire Blvd. This was the year that <em>Gone with the Wind</em> won 8 of is 13 nominated categories. Back then, the ceremony included dinner, so I’d imagine the gathering became slightly rowdier as the evening went on—especially at the Selznick table, which had a lot to celebrate that night.</p>

The date was March 15, 1945, so this was the 17th Academy Awards, honoring the films of 1944. The big winner that year was “Going My Way” which won 7 awards, including Best Picture, Director, and Actor. Playing at Grauman’s that month was “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” which ran pretty much the whole month of March.</p>

This was the year that “Marty” picked up Best Picture, Director, Actor, and Screenplay. In the background, we can see the neon sign for Hody’s on the northwest corner of Hollywood and Vine. I wonder if they did a roaring trade that night after all the celebrities had gone in and the movie fans packing the Hollywood Blvd sidewalk had dispersed.</p>

That’s when the stars were pulling up outside the Pantages Theatre for the 30<sup>th</sup> Academy Awards. That was the year “The Bridge on the River Kwai” triumphed with 7 awards and “Peyton Place” won in none of its 9 nominated categories. The front of the theater is ablaze with spotlights shining from the south side of the boulevard, where hundreds of fans are gathered to catch a glimpse of A-list crowd.</p>

<p>The photographer who took this circa 1960 shot was probably standing outside Grauman’s Chinese Theatre when he snapped the Roosevelt Hotel (where the very first Academy Awards ceremony took place.) The Cinegrill was a wonderful cabaret room that always attracted great talent. The main attraction that week was Liberace’s violinist brother, George, who I knew appeared on Liberace’s TV show but didn’t know he was popular enough to headline his own show. (I couldn’t find any information on the act appearing with him, Lewis & Sanchez. Has anybody reading this heard of them?)</p>

This ceremony honored movies released in 1949, so it was the night Broderick Crawford won for “All the King’s Men,” Olivia de Havilland one for “The Heiress,” and “All the King’s Men” won Best Picture.</p>

Douglas Fairbanks presented each of the awards to the winners, which had already been announced in the press. This photo of the Blossom Room wasn’t taken that night, but it was circa 1929, so this is how that historic space looked at the time. That night, the room was lit by Chinese lanterns and each table was decorated with candles and candy replicas of the gold statuette. I’ll leave the rest to your imagination.</h4>

This was a big year…especially for the producers of “Gigi” who won for Best Picture, Director, Adapted Screenplay, Scoring of a Musical Picture, Original Song, Art Direction, Costume Design, Color Cinematography, and Film Editing. I would hate to have been against “Gigi” that year but I would love to have been there! (And for fans of my books, you might want to keep this photo in mind when you read the 9<sup>th</sup> and final Hollywood’s Garden of Allah novel, <a href="https://martinturnbull.com/sample-page/book-9-closing-credits/"><strong><em>Closing Credits</em></strong></a> due out November 2018.)</h3>
