But back when this photo was taken in 1934, Columbia hadn’t yet swallowed up all the shooting stages between Gower St and Beachwood Drive. The sign atop this two-story building on Beachwood Drive reads “Western Pictures Corporation.” Before that it was called “California Studio” which was home to many, many film companies, most of them fly-by-nighters whom I’ve never heard of.

Philip M says: “I’ve stood in Harry Cohn’s old office and thought, “Man, all the stuff that went down right here!” I’ve also stood in the room right behind his office, which was his private dressing room, bath and shower. On the back wall is a short door with a little 2 or 3 step well in front of it. From inside the dressing room the door only looks 4 or 5 feet tall. But as you approach and walk down those 2-3 steps now the door is full sized. When you open it, you are suddenly in the long corridor of the building next door, which used to be the second floor starlets dressing room corridor. Since Gower St has a slight incline when going from Fountain Ave to Sunset Blvd, the dressing room building is about a half-story lower than the executive office building that Harry was in hence, the dugout and short door. You can see in the picture, the smaller window on the second floor to the left of the drainpipe was Harry’s dressing room. To the right of the pipe at a slightly lower elevation is the second floor of the dressing room building next door.”

<img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="29247" data-permalink="https://martinturnbull.com/2024/04/20/looking-south-along-n-beachwood-drive-at-what-used-to-be-the-western-pictures-corporation-later-columbia-pictures-hollywood-1934-3/437950625_7406996669382655_721738590198208108_n/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/437950625_7406996669382655_721738590198208108_n.jpeg?fit=888%2C455&ssl=1" data-orig-size="888,455" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"1"}" data-image-title="437950625_7406996669382655_721738590198208108_n" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/437950625_7406996669382655_721738590198208108_n.jpeg?fit=300%2C154&ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/437950625_7406996669382655_721738590198208108_n.jpeg?fit=640%2C328&ssl=1" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-29247" src="https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/437950625_7406996669382655_721738590198208108_n.jpeg?resize=640%2C328&ssl=1" alt="" width="640" height="328" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/437950625_7406996669382655_721738590198208108_n.jpeg?w=888&ssl=1 888w, https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/437950625_7406996669382655_721738590198208108_n.jpeg?resize=300%2C154&ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/437950625_7406996669382655_721738590198208108_n.jpeg?resize=768%2C394&ssl=1 768w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" />

Beachwood Drive south of Sunset Blvd is now a private road into Sunset-Gower Studios. According to one source I read, in 1942, movie attendance reached a record high of 80 million a week. A total of 488 features were made, a number never to be surpassed. So I became curious about which movies had been the most popular in 1942. My search led me to a January 6, 1943 headline in Variety:

101 PIX GROSS IN MILLIONS

The article then listed each of the studio’s recent movies that earned more than a million dollars at the box office. I found it interesting reading and thought I would share it with you here.

<img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="20737" Way in Burbank because at the time, the Lamasery (upper right corner) was the largest single standing set (in terms of square feet) built for a motion picture of the sound era. It shows us what a massive undertaking it was—especially for the normally tightfisted Columbia studios. The Columbia ranch now belongs to Warner Bros. And, as you would expect, all those empty fields (the movie was shot over the summer of 1936) surrounding it are now fully developed suburbia.

The Lamasery as seen in the final movie:
Hollywood didn’t have a back lot like the other major studios so in 1934, studio head Harry Cohn bought 40 acres of land in Burbank and built his own back lot with its Western Street and Brownstone Street and other standing outdoor sets. The lot is still there but it’s now known as Warner Ranch after neighboring Warner Bros. acquired it in 1990.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">9216</post-id>

“We are looking for Miss Columbia” advertisement (1930)

Martin Turnbull

Uncategorized

Columbia Pictures

Hollywood

Movie Studios

<img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="6679" data-permalink="https://martinturnbull.com/2015/02/06/we-are-looking-for-miss-columbia-advertisement-1930-2/we-are-looking-for-miss-columbia-advertisement-1930/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/We-are-looking-for-Miss-Columbia-advertisement-1930.jpg?fit=660%2C960&ssl=1" data-orig-size="660,960" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="“We are looking for Miss Columbia” advertisement (1930)" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/We-are-looking-for-Miss-Columbia-advertisement-1930.jpg?fit=206%2C300&ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/We-are-looking-for-Miss-Columbia-advertisement-1930.jpg?fit=640%2C931&ssl=1" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-6679" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/We-are-looking-for-Miss-Columbia-advertisement-1930.jpg?resize=640%2C931" alt=""We are looking for Miss Columbia" advertisement (1930)" width="640" height="931" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/We-are-looking-for-Miss-Columbia-advertisement-1930.jpg?w=660&ssl=1 660w, https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/We-are-looking-for-Miss-Columbia-advertisement-1930.jpg?resize=206%2C300&ssl=1 206w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" />

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">6678</post-id>
