So this (undated) shot gives us a better idea of its actual size. Now that I can see if up close, the gondola at the bottom doesn’t look very big. Even if it’s cramped, I’d love to fly over LA in one. The caption of this photo said that the shot was taken at the Culver City airport. Tracking down the airport’s location proved to be harder than I expected, but it appears to have been in the vicinity of where Jefferson Blvd intersects with Mesmer Ave.

This satellite image show what the land around Culver City airport looked like in January 2024. No room for plans to land now—unless you count the San Diego Freeway!

<img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="30840" data-permalink="https://martinturnbull.com/2024/12/03/the-goodyear-blimp-parked-at-the-culver-city-airport-at-jefferson-blvd-at-mesmer-ave-culver-city-undated-2/january-2024-8/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/January-2024.png?fit=888%2C599&ssl=1" data-orig-size="888,599" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="January 2024" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/January-2024.png?fit=300%2C202&ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/January-2024.png?fit=640%2C432&ssl=1" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-30840" src="https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/January-2024.png?resize=640%2C432&ssl=1" alt="" width="640" height="432" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/January-2024.png?w=888&ssl=1 888w, https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/January-2024.png?resize=300%2C202&ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/January-2024.png?resize=768%2C518&ssl=1 768w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" />

My thanks to Bernard Lee for this map of the location of the Culver City airport:

<img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="30844" data-permalink="https://martinturnbull.com/2024/12/03/the-goodyear-blimp-parked-at-the-culver-city-airport-at-jefferson-blvd-at-mesmer-ave-culver-city-undated-2/map-showing-the-location-of-the-culver-city-airport/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Map-showing-the-location-of-the-Culver-City-airport.jpg?fit=888%2C465&ssl=1" data-orig-size="888,465" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"1"}" data-image-title="Map showing the location of the Culver City airport" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Map-showing-the-location-of-the-Culver-City-airport.jpg?fit=300%2C157&ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Map-showing-the-location-of-the-Culver-City-airport.jpg?fit=640%2C335&ssl=1" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-30844" src="https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Map-showing-the-location-of-the-Culver-City-airport.jpg?resize=640%2C335&ssl=1" alt="" width="640" height="335" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Map-showing-the-location-of-the-Culver-City-airport.jpg?w=888&ssl=1 888w, https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Map-showing-the-location-of-the-Culver-City-airport.jpg?resize=300%2C157&ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Map-showing-the-location-of-the-Culver-City-airport.jpg?resize=768%2C402&ssl=1 768w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" />

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">30838</post-id>

A gas station with a miniature Goodyear blimp at the corner of S. It stood at the corner of S. La Brea Ave and W. 2nd St, which puts it not far from the La Brea Tar Pits. From the words “Vulcanizing” and “Tire Service” in the background, I’m guessing this gas station also did a roaring trade in tires, which explains the mini Goodyear blimp. This photo is from 1931, so those two Angelenos were lucky to have job in the depth of the Depression.

Here’s another view. “somewhere in Southern California” in 1931, that sign on the side of the blimp – “RIDE WITH US – VOLUNTEER” – suggests they were begging for passengers. Granted, in the early 1930s, things may have been a little less safe than they are nowadays, but I’d still have taken my chances. Or if the liner was leaving LA, how much mail could they have already accumulated? It seems to me that transferring something like mail from a little row boat to the Goodyear Blimp sounds awfully tricky with an all-too-real danger that the mail might end up in the Pacific.

** UPDATE ** – “20,000 Letters on Ship for Transfer to Blimp” – From the San Pedro News-Pilot, May 25, 1931″

<img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="24971" data-permalink="https://martinturnbull.com/2022/06/21/transferring-mail-from-an-ocean-liner-to-the-goodyear-blimp-in-los-angeles-harbor-may-25-1931-2/20000-letters-on-ship-for-transfer-to-blimp-from-the-san-pedro-news-pilot-may-25-1931/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/2220000-Letters-on-Ship-for-Transfer-to-Blimp22-From-the-San-Pedro-News-Pilot-May-25-193122.jpg?fit=566%2C514&ssl=1" data-orig-size="566,514" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="“20,000 Letters on Ship for Transfer to Blimp” – From the San Pedro News-Pilot, May 25, 1931″" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/2220000-Letters-on-Ship-for-Transfer-to-Blimp22-From-the-San-Pedro-News-Pilot-May-25-193122.jpg?fit=300%2C272&ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/2220000-Letters-on-Ship-for-Transfer-to-Blimp22-From-the-San-Pedro-News-Pilot-May-25-193122.jpg?fit=566%2C514&ssl=1" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-24971" src="https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/2220000-Letters-on-Ship-for-Transfer-to-Blimp22-From-the-San-Pedro-News-Pilot-May-25-193122.jpg?resize=566%2C514&ssl=1" alt=""20,000 Letters on Ship for Transfer to Blimp" - This shot gives us a better view of the natural amphitheater in which the Bowl sits, and all those parking lots behind it (which I think is now used for performers and crews, but I might be wrong about that.) This shot was taken on September 24, 1932, so it also gives us a glimpse into what pre-freeway Hollywood looked like. These days the Hollywood Freeway rampages through the area shown here on the far left of the image.

This satellite view of the same area is from January 2020:

<img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="24616" data-permalink="https://martinturnbull.com/2022/04/27/aerial-view-of-the-hollywood-bowl-with-goodyear-blimp-los-angeles-september-24-1932-2/jan-2020-5/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/jan-2020.png?fit=1148%2C960&ssl=1" data-orig-size="1148,960" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/jan-2020.png?fit=300%2C251&ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/jan-2020.png?fit=640%2C535&ssl=1" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-24616" src="https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/jan-2020.png?resize=640%2C535&ssl=1" alt="" width="640" height="535" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/jan-2020.png?resize=1024%2C856&ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/jan-2020.png?resize=300%2C251&ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/jan-2020.png?resize=768%2C642&ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/jan-2020.png?w=1148&ssl=1 1148w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" />

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">24613</post-id>

The Goodyear blimp flies over Royce Hall on the UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) campus, Westwood, 1931

Martin Turnbull

Uncategorized

Goodyear blimp

UCLA

Westwood

Was there ever a time when the Goodyear blimp didn’t fly over the skies of Los Angeles? In this shot it’s sailing over Royce Hall on the campus of University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in the Westwood/Bel Air area. The university moved from its original location on Vermont Ave in 1929. This photo is from 1931, so the view up there in the blimp would have largely been of empty land, some of which we can see in the background.

Royce Hall really is something. It’s virtually impossible to get a seat on one of those things so I’ll have to make do with photos like this. Here we see the blimp hovering over Hughes Airport (as in Howard Hughes’ private airfield, which was in the Playa Vista area of Los Angeles, just north of L.A. International Airport. The runway was just south of where Jefferson Blvd runs these days.) In this photo we’re looking northeast toward the Hollywood hills. This photo is undated but the best guess is that it was taken in around the late 1940s, which is an even better time to take a ride in a Goodyear blimp, if you ask me.

This map from Wikipedia shows were the Hughes Airport was in current-day Playa Vista:

<img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="20270" data-permalink="https://martinturnbull.com/2020/06/01/a-goodyear-blimp-hovers-over-hughes-airport-playa-vista-los-angeles-circa-late-1940s-2/this-map-from-wikipedia-shows-were-the-hughes-airport-was-in-current-day-playa-vista/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/This-map-from-Wikipedia-shows-were-the-Hughes-Airport-was-in-current-day-Playa-Vista.png?fit=1156%2C890&ssl=1" data-orig-size="1156,890" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="This map from Wikipedia shows were the Hughes Airport was in current-day Playa Vista" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/This-map-from-Wikipedia-shows-were-the-Hughes-Airport-was-in-current-day-Playa-Vista.png?fit=300%2C231&ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/This-map-from-Wikipedia-shows-were-the-Hughes-Airport-was-in-current-day-Playa-Vista.png?fit=640%2C493&ssl=1" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-20270" src="https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/This-map-from-Wikipedia-shows-were-the-Hughes-Airport-was-in-current-day-Playa-Vista.png?resize=640%2C493&ssl=1" alt="This map from Wikipedia shows were the Hughes Airport was in current-day Playa Vista:" width="640" height="493" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/This-map-from-Wikipedia-shows-were-the-Hughes-Airport-was-in-current-day-Playa-Vista.png?resize=1024%2C788&ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/This-map-from-Wikipedia-shows-were-the-Hughes-Airport-was-in-current-day-Playa-Vista.png?resize=300%2C231&ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/This-map-from-Wikipedia-shows-were-the-Hughes-Airport-was-in-current-day-Playa-Vista.png?resize=768%2C591&ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/martinturnbull.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/This-map-from-Wikipedia-shows-were-the-Hughes-Airport-was-in-current-day-Playa-Vista.png?w=1156&ssl=1 1156w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" />

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">20268</post-id>

Goodyear blimp at Culver City Airport, Los Angeles, circa late 1940s

Martin Turnbull

Uncategorized

Airports Aircraft Airlines

Color photo

Goodyear blimp

Oil

When I came across this photo of the Goodyear blimp at Hughes Airport, I was struck by how little the design of the Goodyear blimp has changed over the years. You’d be glad you thought to throw your camera into your beach bag at the last minute.

Susan M. says: That building with the arched windows to the left of the blimp, was the old armory building that became an officers club during WWII and for a time after. By the late 50s, Synanon took it over. That was ‘the Synanon house on the beach,’ through out the 60s, prior to their moving into Casa del Mar. I went to some really fun dances when it was the officers club in that old armory.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">13953</post-id>
