I recently acquired a copy of the the Film Daily Year Book of Motion Pictures for 1939. Their year books were thick, hard-bound bricks of books that detailed what everything, everyone, every studio, every contract player was doing. Very comprehensive! The 1939 book caught my eye as 1939 was commonly known as Hollywood’s Greatest Year because a huge number of highly regarded movies that have stood the test of time were released during that year. (See my blog for a list.)It’s also why I am writing a trilogy of novels set in 1939 called – fittingly enough – the Hollywood’s Greatest Year trilogy.

In leafing through the book, a 4-page spread caught my eye. It was for MGM’s The Wizard of Oz, which indicates how much they were promoting it. Not many other movies during Hollywood’s creative high-point got that treatment. So I thought I’d show what the spread looked like.

Being published 1939, it was, in fact, a compendium of movies that had come out in 1938, and in some cases, 1937. It jam-packed with details about motion pictures, performers, studios, directors, and so much more. In other words, it’s a book form of IMDB.com!

This one details what performers (aka “players”) recently appeared in. This page included Clark Gable and Judy Garland:

Richard B. says: “I think this is a scene from the film My Friend Irma Goes West (1950). That is actress Corinne Calvet in the white suit.”

This satellite image from May 2022 shows us that gate is now deep inside the studio.

That road stretching from the upper left to the lower right is Gower St, and the wider road it deadends at the bottom is Melrose Ave. Where Gower meets Melrose is the famous corner where RKO had a huge cement globe with its iconic radio tower on top. But in this photo, it’s not there yet. Nor is the soundstage it sat on. Instead, that area is the studio parking lot. This photo came with no date, but I’ve seen a similar one, which was dated 1930, so I guess this was taken around that time, too. In the far upper right corner we can see the soundstages of neighboring Paramount, and in the far upper left, the open land of the Hollywood Cemetery which was founded in 1899, and both of which are still there. RKO on the other hand is long gone, and those studio facilities are now part of Paramount.

John J. says: “The photo is likely 1929-1930, judging by 5716 Camerford Ave., where they added a small house in place of their southwest corner garage in 1930.”

Aerophile says: “Had to be after October 23, 1928, that was RKO General’s founding date. RKO was gone by 1947. The final film with the logo was March 1959. The studio had been shut down since 1947.”

This is how that view looked in May 2022.

And if it is, I’d love to see the whole thing. Nevertheless, it gives us an idea of what it looked like when studio workers left RKO’s Gower St entrance at the end of a day making movie magic. Apparently this is from 1945 and I can’t help but wonder which movie they’d been working on. Was it RKO’s first Technicolor production, “The Spanish Main”? “The Enchanted Cottage” with Dorothy Maguire and Robert Young? Or that cinematic classic, “Zombies on Broadway”?

Sebastian T says: “Lucille Ball Building. I worked there for 4 years when it was Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner’s company. The entire second floor was C/W at one point. Paula had Lucy’s office on the other side—the gorgeous suite with bay windows, fireplace, private dining room and kitchen, wood paneling, bathroom, private stairway, etc. That office above the Paramount/RKO sign pictured here was Tom’s. Eventually, we took over the third floor which was actually two screening rooms. The bigger one was remodeled into Tom’s new office. That third floor was totally abandoned and open to the elements until I “found” it and started reading scripts up there to get away from the fray below. Paula heard I was up there and found me—then talked to the studio and took over that space. The smaller screening room was actually Sherry Lansing’s storage room! It too became part of C/W. I spent many hours reading through Sherry’s old files lol. This was from 1995-1999.”

RKO’s longtime neighbor, Paramount, now owns what used to be RKO studios. This is how that Gower St entrance looked in July 2022.

In 1949, Capitol Records bought what had then been the studios of KHJ radio at 5515 Melrose Ave, which put it sandwiched between RKO and Paramount. The fact that one of Capitol’s original investors was Buddy DeSylva, who was a producer at Paramount probably isn’t a coincidence.

Vintage LA says: “The first session held there was for Scatman Crothers.”

Sam I says: “Early on it was Decca’s studio. Bing recorded “White Christmas” there. Convenient for him since he filmed at Paramount.”

Tony V says: ‘The building was originally occupied by the NBC radio network. Capitol Records was next, then KHJ/KCAL, Channel 9 television.”

And here is a floor plan:

This theater was called the Palace and it stood at 30 Pine Avenue in Long Beach. Paramount’s “The Girl at Home” starring Vivien Martin was playing at the time, which pegs this shot at 1917. I love how each of the lights have a warm glow about them. And look at their neighbor, “Persian Dye Works.” I doubt they scored any spillover business after the picture got out.

Running up the middle of the photo we can see the soundstages and to the right (i.e. the west) the backlot. This was a time when RKO was a separate studio existing directly to the left out of the frame of this photo. To the north of the photo is a cemetery known back then as Hollywood Memorial Park. For a long while, it was the main cemetery where many of Hollywood’s early leading light were buried. These days it’s called Hollywood Forever and is where Judy Garland was recently moved to.

DeMille’s “The Ten Commandments” did film in Egypt in October through December of 1954, most of the movie was shot at the Paramount lot (March to August 1955) including the famous parting of the Red Sea sequence. There’s Charlton Heston in his red Moses robes with a line of key lights in the background. Meanwhile, much braver extras face swirling waters gushing past them at what looks like quite a force. I hope they got hazard pay that day.

Most aerial photos of Los Angeles I find look out across LA or Hollywood or sometimes the San Fernando Valley. So it’s nice to find one that looks directly down. This is from 1938, and those three main north-south streets are Cahuenga Blvd, Vine St, and Gower St. The east-west street at the top of the photo is Santa Monica Blvd, which means that park at the far right is the Hollywood Forever Cemetery (known back then as Hollywood Memorial Park.) And directly to the south of that, we can see the soundstages of Paramount Studios. And on the left are a few open fields. There aren’t many of them left in Hollywood anymore.
