Max Factor building, Hollywood, 1930s

Max Factor building, Hollywood, 1930sThe Max Factor building on Highland Ave, around the corner from Hollywood Boulevard. This building was a storage building until the make-up mogul decided to move from downtown Los Angeles to Hollywood in the mid 1930s. It was a smart move as he became the go-to guy for movie stars. The building had a glamorous 1935 opening, during which Claudette Colbert dedicated the room for brunettes, Jean Harlow dedicated the blonde room, and Ginger Rogers opened the salon for redheads. Amazingly, the building is still there and, remarkably, still looks pretty much like this. It’s currently home to the Hollywood History museum.

I am writing a book of my life in Hollywood in 1965 and ’66. I worked in the laboratory of Max Factor. Is there any way I could obtain or at least see pictures of the lab. Any information would be helpful as I do want to give a detailed description. I can only remember so much. I would love to get in touch with anybody that worked there at that time. Thank you so much. • Have you tried contacting the management of the Hollywood Museum? There is a large room in the museum filled with photographs of the era – they must have sourced them from somewhere. Perhaps they could point you in the right direction?

Also, the LA Public Library have a huge photo collection on their website – lapl.org – so they might be of help. Their librarians are very helpful.

Here’s Harlow – in her natural honey-blonde shade – dedicating the “Blondes Only” Room in November 1935. How I would have loved to have been there!
