The grand opening of the Hollywood Western Building, 5500 Hollywood Blvd, LA on December 8th, 1928. The building got such an opening because it was financed by Louis B Mayer and Irving Thalberg (which explains why Norma Shearer unlocked the door with a golden.) The Hollywood Western was purpose built for the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), including the Hays Office. (Irving Thalberg was particularly interested in proving Hollywood could police itself, he even helped write the Hays Office “Don’ts and Be Carefuls”). The building also housed Central Casting.
Basement contained the Holly-Western Bowling Academy (Bowling/Billiards). A view of the west end of the structure shows adverting for the Clifton Holly-Western Cafeteria in the 1940’s. Earlier image does show a cafeteria on the west ground floor, but the name does not seem to be Clifton at that time (McNall???). Segragation of central casting was ultimately terminated, allowing all to use the facility.
