The Hotel Iris (later the St. Moritz) on Sunset Boulevard – it’s where Judy Garland (back then, of course, her name was still Frances Gumm) and her family stayed on vacation in 1926. Judy’s very first performance in Los Angeles, was at the Earlanger’s Mason Theatre on July 10, 1926 during an afternoon kidee’s matinee of Topsy and Eva with the Duncan sisters. It was during this trip that the Gumms decided to move to California, soon after settling in in the town of Lancaster, north of Los Angeles.
My brother and I stayed here for 1 night when arriving in Hollywood, in 1974, in search of an apartment and a new life. The hotel was a little run down, but doable- for a couple of young brothers from New England. We snuck our dog into our room from a side door, those were some crazy and fun times. Glad to see the St Moritz still exists! We wound up renting an apt. nearby at 1317 N Bronson, right around the corner (studio, with a murphy bed, $110 a month)! What memories….
I live at the St Moritz. This is where Judy Garland lived when on vacation. Then her name was Frances Ethel Gumm and at that this was the Iris Hotel.
