In this aerial shot from 1940, we can see the May Company department store on the corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Ave. It later became the Los Angeles County Museum of Art West building and will soon be transformed into the new Academy Hollywood museum. To the left of it in this photo, we can see the popular Simon’s drive-in restaurant where the Googie-influenced Johny’s Coffee Shop now stands.
A decade later…I have a question: you can see the May Co had their own gas station at the edge of their parking lot (upper right side of photo at Fairfax/6th St)…but on the other side of 6th Street does that sign say “GOLF?” I know there was a miniature golf course on Beverly about a block east of Fairfax but was there some sort of golf thing at this location, too? Could this have been assigned for that or just a golf store in general?
