There are lots of photos of the May Company department store on Wilshire Blvd floating around, but this is the first I’ve seen of the view from the May Company looking south across Wilshire. This was taken in 1940, the year the store opened, and we can see how residential Wilshire still was – almost semi-rural. In the distance, we can see the tower of the iconic Carthay Circle theater, To the immediate right of the store, we can see the circular Art Deco drive-in restaurant, Simon’s.
