There are still enough of these grand old apartment blocks to get a taste of what Hollywood must have been like back in the 1920s and 30s…but only a taste, of course. This is a shot of the La Belle Tour Apartments at 6200 Franklin Ave, shortly after it opened in 1929. Today, it is known as Hollywood Tower. It got a facelift a couple of years ago, and although it doesn’t look exactly like this, it’s still in very good condition.
There is just something about these big white buildings in Hollywood with the mix of sun and shadows, palm trees and old cars that convinces me I HAD to have been around in those Golden Age days! Even the fire escapes on this pristine building are intricately designed. Wonder what an apartment went for at the La Belle Tour back in the day?
Here’s another shot from 1935 that shows how truly expansive this place is.
