Joni James greet crowds at Ciro's, Sunset Strip, 1953This isn’t a view of the Sunset Strip we normally see: from the rooftop of Ciro’s (now The Comedy Store.) This was taken in 1953, when the Strip wasn’t nearly quite so built up as it is now. That’s singer Joni James waving to the crowd—I’d never heard of her so I looked her up. She was popular in the mid-50s to mid-60s and—according to Wikipedia—was the first American to record at Abbey Road Studios in London, made famous by the Beatles.
