Discarded Streetcars, Terminal Island, Long Beach

Discarded streetcars, Terminal Island, Long BeachA small number of the retired red cars were sold to other cities around the world that still had the foresight to realize the ongoing need for electric transit. The vast majority were stripped of anything that could float and then dropped into the ocean to serve as foundations for coral reefs. But first, as shown here, they stacked on Terminal Island, Long Beach. Happily, two of them are preserved at the Orange Empire Railway Museum in Perris, CA.

I wonder which two out of this heartbreaking pile are the lucky survivors? I can’t help but compare this pile of the unwanted to how our beloved Hollywood has been ripped apart through the years. 🙁

Long live the Golden Age of Hollywood – kept alive by hearts like Martin’s!
