The set for Douglas Fairbanks’ “Robin Hood” (1922) was built at the Pickford-Fairbanks Studio at Santa Monica Blvd & Formosa in Hollywood. This movie was the first one to be given a big, splashy Hollywood premiere at the then-brand new Grauman’s Egyptian Theater on Hollywood Blvd (his more famous Chinese Theater opened a few years later.) “Robin Hood” was one of the most expensive films of the 1920s, with a budget estimated at approximately one million dollars. This huge castle set and an entire 12th century village of Nottingham probably swallowed a large portion of that. For the locals who lived in that area, the sight of a Norman castle must have surprised even them!
