Here in L.A. we’re so used to taking the freeway that we forget that there was a time when they didn’t exist…until we see a photo like this. Entire tracts of houses were sometimes razed to make way for new freeways. This 1957 photograph, taken between Wilshire and Venice Boulevards along the route of the future San Diego (405) Freeway, shows a neighborhood split by the construction.
