Don the Beachcomber, at 1727 North McCadden Place, Hollywood. Originally established inside a Hollywood hotel in 1933 after the repeal of Prohibition, owner Ernest Raymond Beaumont-Gantt moved to McCadden Place in 1937. In time, it would become one of Bogie’s favorite hangouts—probably because the rooms were so dark and he could hide from fans and the press. He also probably enjoyed their most popular cocktail, called the Zombie. The various rooms had names like “Black Hole of Calcutta” and “the Cannibal Room.” To increase the ambiance, they even installed an inside corrugated iron roof onto which they sprinkled “rain.”
