Douglas Fairbanks using a huge megaphone to communicate with hundreds of extras during the filming of 1922’s “Robin Hood.” Cumbersome devices like these were necessary before electronically amplified sound was developed. Good thing this was a silent picture; Fairbanks would have used up all his voice yelling at the extras.
