At the corner of Hollywood and Highland, passengers board a streetcar heading north on Highland. On the right, they’ll pass the Hollywood Hotel. I wonder if those cars went “Clang! Clang! Clang!” like Judy Garland said they did.
Look at the two door car in the foreground. It started out with either a trunk or a rumble seat, but that was converted to a small pickup truck type cargo bed. Apparently during the 30’s this became a “thing”. People who needed a “utility” type vehicle could buy a kit from their dealership and convert the rear compartment of their two door coupe.
Look down the center of the hotel’s turret to see the “STOP” sign that was for the streetcars. Then continue down to see a traffic combo semaphore & target light signal for autos going down Highland. When the red car moved, it likely was required to activate a bell (electric or pneumatic controlled?) for notifying all pedestrians and vehicles. The sound of bells was still common then, especially with all the yellow cars, as were airhorns for all the local train movements. But it was the weekly test of air raid sirens, and the constantcy of jackhammers, that really stood out. The rest was just normal sounds.
