British actor, Charles Laughton, lived at the Garden of Allah during filming of “Mutiny on the Bounty” (1935) and “Hunchback of Notre Dame” (1939) In September of 1939, during the filming ‘Hunchback’, L.A. was hit with a 2-week heatwave. Laughton would come home for lunch and stand in the pool up to his chest so that his Quasimodo makeup wouldn’t be wrecked. Can you imagine emerging from your villa for a dip in the pool to find Quasimodo standing there, saying “How d’you do?”…?!?!?
