These days we know Natalie Schafer almost solely from her role as Mrs Howell on “Gilligan’s Island” but back in the day (1940s and ’50s) she acted in movies, including “The Snake Pit” (1948) and “Anastasia” (1956). She lived at the Garden of Allah in the 1930s where she fell in love with fellow resident Charlie Butterworth and at one point was engaged to him. She later married another Garden resident, Louis Calhern, and then had a romance with yet another resident writer George Kaufman.
