As far as the conservative locals were concerned, the neighborhood of Hollywood went to the dogs when the Cafe Montmartre opened on Hollywood Boulevard in 1923. Until then they’d been able to keep riff-raff like those awful motion picture people to a minimum. But when when Adolph “Eddie” Brandstatter opened the the first nightclub in Hollywood and it turned into a huge, instant hit with tango competitions (won by Rudolph Valentino) and charleston competitions (won by Joan Crawford), the old guard knew their days were numbered.
