On August 15, 1939, MGM premiered “The Wizard of Oz” at Grauman’s Chinese Theater. They erected bleachers for movie fans to sit on and watch the parade of people (Judy Garland was in New York for the premiere there), and behind them they built this huge, neon sigh. I wish I could see what the third line said!
** UPDATE ** – The third line said: “In Glorious Technicolor.”
Hi, working on a “Wizard of Oz” project with Warner Brothers, do you have a high res file of this image?
Thank you,
-daniel…
No Daniel, I don’t. But Marc Wannamaker at the Bison Archives and/or the Academy might – they have a huge photo collection.
I realize this post is nearly 10 years old, but the third line reads “In Glorious Technicolor”.
Thanks, Kevin. I’m glad to finally know what the bottom line of the sign said.
