Alla Nazimova as Madame Ranevsky in “The Cherry Orchard” in 1928. Chekov was one of Nazimova’s specialties and in this photo I think we can see why. She looks every inch the Chekovian heroine, especially in that magnificent dress. (Alla Nazimova was the original owner of the Garden of Allah hotel where my novels are set.)
