When the Garden of Allah hotel was closed down, an auction was held to sell off everything that wasn’t nailed down–and probably most of the stuff that was. The original sign that stood on the Sunset Blvd entrance was bought by a guy named Jack Rellis who had it shipped to his home in Detroit.
I saw the “GARDEN OF ALLAH” which moved by a friend and co-worker, Jack Rellis, from where it was first seen in Hollywood to Detrooit to his back yard back of his home 1023 Parker Street Detroit, MI 48214-2612.
Jack could not take the sign with him on his last move . He left us December 8, 1978. This address is located on a north-south Stree on the west side of the street above Jefferson, which runs northeast toward Grosse Point.
The sigh was re-neoned and when turned on,lit up the whole neighborhood like a ballpark.
The sign may still be there with the present owner and if you want it, you may have to check the records for the City of Detroit. The condition of the sign will be an issue and the cost of moving it will be a lot more expensive today.
Jack, worked at my Father’s, advertising agency, in the 60s thru mid 70s, he, and his wife, “the Contessa” were dear friends…as a 14 year old Grosse Pointe, sophomore, Jack asked me to do some yard work, landscaping for them…I helped clean his overgrown garden. Up, he took me sweaty, dirty, and smelly, to Pinkies, for lunch….a 14 year old, me, best memories, models, swooning, and fawning over, an ignorant young man…

Thanks for this info, Mel. I don’t have the finances to move the sign back to LA but I am intrigued about where it might be now!
