Beverly Hills oil fields, 1928

Beverly Hills oil fields, 1928Wow, and I thought the land in Beverly Hills was valuable now – back in the 1920s it had oil fields. This shot is from 1928, with the oil wells at left, the Fox Studios at center, and Santa Monica Blvd at the bottom. The oil fields turned out to be a bust, so the owner, Burton Green, decided to venture into real estate. He named the new planned community after his hometown, Beverly, Mass.

  1. I graduated from Beverly Hills High School in 1948 and we had a functioning oil derrick on the campus. Not knowing any better, I did not find it unusual; it was just part of an amazing school.
