Bullock’s Wilshire department store, Wilshire Blvd, 1930s

Bullock's Wilshire department store, Wilshire Blvd, 1930sBullock’s Wilshire department store, Wilshire Boulevard, I’m guessing 1930s. At the time it opened – September 26th, 1929, a month before the stock market crashed – the venture was considered risky because it sat outside the traditional city center. But the canny Mr. Bullock knew that Los Angeles was going the way of the motorcar and designed his luxury store to be oriented toward what was referred to “the carriage trade.” When this photo was taken, there doesn’t appear to be a whole lot of “carriage,” does there? But Bullock’s vision turned out to be right in the long run and the store stayed open for decades.
