Advertisement featuring Benny Goodman for the Palomar Ballroom, Leimert Park, Los Angeles, late 1930sThe Palomar Ballroom was a massive and very popular dance venue in Leimert Park (corner Vermont & 2nd) during the late 1930s. It’s where Benny Goodman got his big break during late Summer 1935. Unfortunately, it had to close when it burned down on October 2nd, 1938, sending 1500 dancers scrambling for the exits. But take a look at this ad. The 30 and 40 cent admission included “dancing, cover, loges, and entertainment.” I think of loges being a private box in a theater but never thought of them being needed in a ballroom.
