I love this color shot of Broadway in downtown L.A. taken in—I’m guessing—late 1940s. In the background, the gorgeous blue building is the Eastern Columbia, home to a department store, which opened in 1930. It’s still there, still that same color and is now a building of loft style apartments. Closer to the camera is the United Artists building. It was built by United Artists, the studio founded in 1919 by D. W. Griffith, Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, and Douglas Fairbanks. In this building was the theater where all UA movies were premiered. It also is still standing and after being a church for so long, it’s currently in the midst of being converted to the hip Ace Hotel.
