Who knew that Santa Catalina Island had an airport? Apparently it was established at Hamilton Cove near Avalon in 1931, and was the airport was home to the Wilmington-Catalina Air Line, which provided transportation to and from the island for tourists. It was the main method of transportation for the Chicago Cubs when they arrived for spring training.
I flew to Catalina and back on the seaplane in the late 60’s when I was a kid. I only remember a few things about the trip: The entry door was towards the tail of the plane. The luggage hold was in the front of the plane. They were VERY careful about how much weight they could hold (both human and luggage) and the cabin was NOT spacious! (I think they were using Grumman Goose planes.)
I remember when we landed in the ocean, I was sitting towards the rear and looked over at the door – only to see that the porthole window was covered by water! It was apparently an ocean swell, and once the plane settled to idle speed, all was good again. It sort of startled me though!

I can imagine how much it startled you! It would have freaked me out!
