Crowded Santa Monica Beach in 1936

In the days before air conditioning became standard, the best way for Angelenos to cool off was to hit the beach. One of the most popular beaches was (and still is) Santa Monica beach, partly because it’s so wide and can accommodate lots of bodies and beach umbrellas as we can see in this July 19, 1936 photo.
