Ernie’s 5 Cent Cafe, located at 806 E. 5th Street in downtown L.A., where a person could get a meal for a nickel back in 1939. Your choices were: Beef Stew, Chili & Beans, Spaghetti Red, Baked Beef Hash, Ham Sandwich, Egg Sandwich, or Hamburger. Everything marked for a nickel. Ernie’s was open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., 7 days a week. I bet they did a booming business!
Wow, looks like an old movie set! And after you enjoyed your nickel meal, you could hop right next door for a shave and “bath ?” for only a quarter! Boy, those were the days!
