Brentwood Theater playing “It Had To Be You” in 1948.

Brentwood Theater playing "It Had To Be You" in 1948.

The Brentwood Theater, now demolished but formerly located at 11611 Wilshire Blvd. This picture was taken by Life magazine when “It Had To Be You” (1947) starring Ginger Rogers was playing. It looks like they also held Keno games, but the important information here is “Free Babysitting Service.” (See caveat information in comments below.)

  1. David R. Ginsburg says:

CAVEAT: This is the Brentwood Theater in Brentwood, California, the town in Contra Costa County, not the suburb of West Los Angeles next to Santa Monica. The image was taken on his hometown main street in 1947 by LIFE Magazine photographer Allan Grant, who lived there. It is thus not a vintage picture of the Brentwood Twins Theater, located at 2524 Wilshire Boulevard in Santa Monica, now closed.

Martin, On even further research, it appears that there is a conflict of opinion on this image. Some think it was the Brentwood Twin, but it is not. See the Cinema Treasures website for that. My considered view is that your original caption is more likely correct, since another address visible at the right of the picture is in the 11600 block. Cheers!
