Thelma Todd's Sidewalk Cafe, Pacific Palisades, early 1930s

Thelma Todd was a popular actress whose 10-year career from the mid-20s to the mid-30s is best remembered for her comedic roles, but she also appeared in the original 1931 film version of “The Maltese Falcon.” In 1934, she opened the café shown in this photograph. It stood in Pacific Palisades, and was called Thelma Todd’s Sidewalk Cafe, attracting both Hollywood celebrities and tourists. Sadly, Todd’s body was found on December 16, 1935, in her car inside a garage a block from Todd’s restaurant. Her death caused a sensation at the time and was eventually determined to have been caused by carbon monoxide poisoning. Although somewhat changed, the building is still there today.
