On August 26, 1929, the Graf Zeppelin landed in Los Angeles on the homebound leg of a Hearst-sponsored (and therefore widely-reported) round-world voyage at the site of what would later become LAX. In my first book, “The Garden on Sunset,” one of the chapters takes place here. The accounts of it I read related that thousands of people greeted this marvel of the air when it arrived. In this photo, I can see maybe a couple of dozen—I guess everybody else was out of the frame!
