This photo of Sunset Boulevard from Highland to La Brea is dated 1918. The cluster of larger buildings at left center is Hollywood High at Sunset and Highland. Closer to the middle, we can see the misaligned Orange Drive where the Roosevelt Hotel now stands.
Sycamore terminates down at Hawthorn. Then we have Lanewood and on to Sunset. (John Bengtson has now identified a Chaplin film, and another silent, shot across there with one of his readers. See his site notes for full information.) Orange runs down the left side as a through roadway. So where is the Hollywood Women’s Club (La Brea & Hollywood SW corner) in here? The PE divergence seems to be visible.
BTW…the title notes Sunset, which is further down. The big road crossing below is Hollywood Blvd., just in case anyone doesn’t get it. La Brea angled in slightly eastward going down to Sunset. (And the Bengtson blog gives us a canal, partially subducted, down this stretch of old groves.)
