In the 1940s, the Bublichki Russian Café sat at 8846 Sunset Boulevard opposite the corner of Larabee St where the Viper Room stands today. It featured both a Russian orchestra and a bar . . . which you probably needed if you sat too close to the orchestra. This photo was taken in 1945.
Bublichki, 8846 Sunset Boulevard, Hollywood – “Continental music featuring Sasha Lucas and his Ensemble”:
Remember it well went there several times, once on Graduating from high school in 1949, a fun place with interesting food, is there a menu?
As a matter of fact, Beverlee, I just came across a menu and added it to my page!
Would you have any info as to who were the original owners/managers/head chef of the cafe? Am asking due to the possibility of my grandparents possible involvement in the restaurant during the 1940’s-50’s. Thank you
Sorry Galina, but I don’t. But I’ll certainly keep my eyes and ears peeled for any info.
I, with my family would eat at Bublichki from time to time but, being so young I only remember the location as being different than Sunset? I recall 6th Street or Beverly Blvd, instead. Perhaps there where two locations? Also, a violin player, played at the restaurant who was also an actor too, his name escapes me. We enjoyed the food and was delighted to find this site as well after so many years…………..
Hello, and thanks for stopping by. I’ve only ever encountered the Sunset Strip address…which doesn’t mean to say there wasn’t a 2nd location at some point!
The Bublichki was never in any other place. My Father Jack Rabinowitsh was the pianist and accordian player there from 1942 or 43 til the early 50’s. The owners were Moussa and Alexander Danaroff. Their daughter Irena also worked there as a hostess.Dont know who the chef was. A number of Hollywood stars used to hang out there often. Guy Madison, Gail Russell and last but not least Marion Davies, every nite.If you reply I will be happy to give you my phone number, as there is lots more info I have.
Hello Irene – and thanks for taking the time to comment. So Marion used to come in every night? She must have felt very comfortable and welcome there.
My parents took me there around 1946. I can still smell the sweet aroma today. When did it close? Miss it.
Lucky you, Melvin. I don’t know when it closed but it was around for a very long time.
During the late 1950’s, my father and I delivered produce to your Dad’s restaurant daily.
I remember at 4pm walking up the stairway entrance from the parking lot below and the delicious aroma of the food being prepared there.
I am now 77 years old but there were great memories that still linger in my mind of Bublichki cafe.
We’ve read in a couple of places that actor Leonid Kinskey owned this restaurant. Anyone know if that’s true?
I’ll answer my own question: Newspaper accounts beginning in 1950 describe Kinskey as co-owner and host of Bublichki.
