High Tower Drive elevator, Hollywood, 1931This is one of my favorite places to take people in Los Angeles. It’s a hidden gem back behind the Hollywood Bowl called High Tower. It’s a small development of homes built into a hillside overlooking Hollywood separated only by a walking path. You park your car at the bottom of the hill and ride up to your house by way of this elevator. It makes for a very charming, quiet neighborhood unlike anywhere else in L.A. This photo was taken in 1931.

Incidentally, it features in the Robert Altman film, The Long Goodbye. Elliott Gould plays detective Philip Marlowe and he lives in this complex with the elevators.
