East from Vendome and Sunset Boulevard on Tunnel Day, Los Angeles, September 15, 1909It’s hard to believe Sunset Boulevard ever looked like this. The fine folks in this photo were out enjoying “Tunnel Day” – September 15, 1909 – which was the day that a pair of tunnels in downtown Los Angeles opened, thus significantly cutting down the time it took to get to Hollywood. This picture is facing east from the corner of Vendome and Sunset in what’s now known as Silver Lake.
