Shoppers walking down Wilshire Boulevard in 1937

Shoppers walking down Wilshire, 1937 Graff's (dresses), Certified Prescriptions, Staber (furs) and Melody LaneHere’s a slice-of-life photo for us: here we see Shoppers walking down Wilshire Blvd in 1937. From left to right we have Graff’s (dresses), Certified Prescriptions, Staber (furs) and Melody Lane restaurant. That Melody Lane was on the corner of Detroit Street, which puts it roughly 10 blocks from the May Company department store on the Fairfax corner. From the looks of the two women in this photo, it seems huge fur collars were “in” that year.

It’s funny you should write this, Martin, as I just wrote the same thing (paraphrasing) in another post. I LOVE seeing how ordinary life was on the streets of Hollywood and LA in the ’30s particularly. Just regular folks going about their business and who knew if they even knew their picture was being taken and would be seen and talked about all these years later.

Of course I appreciate a “staged” portrait shot of the stars as anyone else on your blog, but these portraits of ordinary life are every bit as interesting to me.

Notice the woman walking on the sidewalk is wearing slacks under her fur-trimmed coat! Wonder if she was on her way to Melody Lane for a leisurely bite to eat after a busy morning shopping before heading home?

And how clean and spotless the sidewalk is save for the scrap of paper near the curb.

Who’s to say that little girl window shopping with her mother didn’t grow up to be a famous star?!

Please keep posting these wonderful journeys back in time.

    Jean
