In the 1930s, 40s & 50s, Los Angeles was dotted with drive in restaurants like this one—Carpenters, Delores, Scrivner’s, Herbert’s. This is Simon’s drive-In, which stood on the corner Wilshire Blvd and Hoover Street, opposite Lafayette Park, and a couple of blocks east of the Bullocks Wilshire department store. It’s now a boring parking lot, but back in 1939, which this photo was taken, it was one of the more popular joints in town.
Notice on the back bottom-center of the menu that the “s” whips back to underline Simon’s. This is exactly how it appeared on the top of the silver plated flatware. The backstamp will either be DOHRCO (for the Dohrmann Hotel Supply company) or Victor Triple (an International Silver brand mark). It’s all the same simple pattern though.
