Schwab's Pharmacy and its neighbor, Googie’s coffee shop at Sunset Blvd & Crescent Heights, circa 1950sHere’s a quintessential L.A. photo: Schwab’s Pharmacy and its neighbor, Googie’s coffee shop near the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Crescent Heights, putting it opposite the Garden of Allah Hotel, which stood on the west side of that intersection. If you look closely at the billboard on the right, you can see it advertising “jai alai” (a sport involving a ball bounced off a walled space, a bit like squash) games being played at the Fronton Palace in Tijuana. Googie’s opened in 1949 so this photo was probably taken in the early 50s when a drive down to Tijuana probably took a heck of a lot longer than it does today.
