I found this gem on the Davelandweb site – it’s the driveway into Pickfair – the Beverly Hills home of Hollywood’s first power couple, Douglas Fairbanks Sr and Mary Pickford. I’d never seen what it looked like as you drove up. Two things surprised me: how close the house was to the street—that driveway doesn’t look too long—and also the fact they have the name “PICKFAIR” written clearly on the gatepost. It’s the 1920s equivalent of, say, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt putting up a sign saying “WE LIVE HERE!” Oh, for those long-gone paparazzi-free days.
That driveway shown going up to Pickfair isn’t the whole story. From the actual public street, there’s a considerable long sweep of paved roadway where the house wasn’t all that visible…perhaps a peek of an overhanging eave but nothing further. The drive shown in the picture shows about the last third or less of the true drive, and Miss Mary and her beloved second husband, Buddy Rogers (a hunk, if gossip was correct) had their privacy. Plus some good watchdogs, both two and four-legged!
