The Hawaii Theater stood at 5941 Hollywood Boulevard. Judging by this photo, I’d say it looked more spectacular at night, lit up the way it is shown here in this 1941 photo, when “Vivacious Lady” starring Ginger Rogers and Jimmy Stewart was playing. It looks like they had some sort of elaborate of mannequins on the top level … surely they’re not actual people up there?
Wow, did the pictures of the Hawaii Theater bring back my childhood. I saw Attack of the Crab Monsters and Not of the Earth there among others. I have given up on going to movie theaters these days. Do you see the images of the Hawaii. It was much nicer than any of the shopping mall movie theaters we have today. By the way, they had these lights behind the wall in the theater that made stuff on the walls look like they were moving such as a volcano erupting etc. Thanks for this.
Gary – thanks for stopping by and sharing your memories. These black and white photos are all I’ve seen of the Hawaii Theater. I envy you that you had the opportunity to see movies there live in person!

Great pictures. Thanks for sharing. Anyone have a color shot of the front I always wondered about the colors of that mural.
I’d love to see a color photo, too. I’ve always wondered what that mural looked like in real life.
Has anyone seen this color shot of the Hawaii all in its blue glory ? Click on the picture and it will take you to a much larger one.

Now it’s interesting as according to this source, the theater opened in 1940.
Here’s more info including details about the interior. Poster comments offer more interesting info:
