Map of Los Angeles published by the Farmer’s Market at Third St & Fairfax, circa early 1950s

I thought this was a very cute map. It was put out by Farmer’s Market at the corner of Third Street and Fairfax. I’m guessing this is early-to-mid 1950s because it shows CBS Television City, which opened in 1952. The Gilmore Drive-in Theater is still there (opened 1948), as is the Carthay Circle Theater (1926 to 1969), and even the Sunset Bridal Path, which was a horse-riding path opened from 1925 to 1958 near the Beverly Hills Hotel.

This map is pre 1952 because it shows Gilmore Stadium in the upper part.

I think that you are confusing Gilmore Stadium with CBS.

I went to Hancock Park Grammar school across Third St. from 1940 to 1944. The school had no cafeteria so we used to go to the Farmer’s Market for lunch. Later, I used to go to Gilmore Stadium to watch the midget auto races there. I went into USAF in 1951 and when I came home, a couple of years later, the stadium was gone and CBS was there.

    • You’re right, Shelley. I hadn’t looked too closely at the little picture at the top of the white square. That is indeed the Gilmore Stadium, so it’s odd the map would show both because CBS replaced the stadium. Perhaps the map was being drawn up while the stadium was going down and CBS was going up. That probably puts the date of the map at 1951 because CBS opened on November 16, 1952.

Well, the map doesn’t really show CBS, only has a handwritten reference, which may have been put on at a later date. That little oval icon up at the top is definitely the stadium with the flags.
