The Breakers Hotel in downtown Long Beach was a luxury oceanfront resort hotel which opened in 1926.
In 1938, the hotel was purchased by Conrad Hilton who turned it into the eighth hotel in the Hilton chain. Hilton spent at least $200,000 on renovations and converted the penthouse into the Sky Room. Movie stars such as Clark Gable, Errol Flynn, Rita Hayworth, Cary Grant and John Wayne were said to have been customers at the Sky Room. One customer recalled,: “It was a dating place, like the Brown Derby and Coconut Grove. It was the place to go.”
In 1947, the hotel became the Wilton and stayed with that until 1961. From 1961 to 1967, it was the Breakers International. From 1967 to 1982, it was a retirement hotel.
What was the other bar at the Breakers Hotel on the Locust side entrance?
I’m sorry Vince, but my knowledge of vintage Long Beach places isn’t great.
