Schwabs menswear store, 6358 Hollywood Boulevard.

schwabs mens store 6358 Hollywood Blvd Schwab’s Pharmacy – the famous one on Sunset across the street from the Garden of Allah – was only one of a mini chain of pharmacies across Los Angeles. I’d never heard that they opened a menswear store at 6358 Hollywood Boulevard. In fact, I don’t know if this store was even opened by the four Schwab brothers, but it makes you wonder, doesn’t it?

Martin, like you have mentioned, I also love these random shots of ordinary people doing ordinary things as long as it’s taken during the Golden Age of Hollywood. Wonder where these folks are headed? Are they on their lunch hour? Shopping? Simply using the sidewalk to get from A to B? Did the window-shopper ever end up going inside? And bikes were used as a means of getting around. Looks like there’s still Red Car tracks in the middle of the boulevard.

Of course my curiosity was piqued as I didn’t know Schwab’s had a mens clothing store either so did a bit of sleuthing.

According to the book “The Story of Hollywood: An Illustrated History” the clothing store was not affiliated with the drugstore/pharmacy chain and opened in 1922 on a former church’s site.

Using this link, if you click on ‘view all’ it will take you to ads for the clothing store.

Some of the makes appear to be wearing arm bands..seems there might have been something beyond the usual day? The bikes on right might be Western Union delivery related (note the window of storefront) services? The drug store on the left corner is “Thrifty” by this time as seen on the awning.
