On October 3rd, 1942, the Hollywood Canteen opened at 1451 Cahuenga (near Sunset Blvd). It was the brainchild of Bette Davis and John Garfield, who recognized that servicemen on liberty passes needed somewhere to go while in Los Angeles. It was a huge and instant success, filled every day and night with excited servicemen and volunteers from the movie industry. But it looks like these two eager beavers got there just a little too early. Come back later, fellas, you won’t be turned away.
@ M.T.: “…filled every day and night…”
I often read things about the Hollywood Canteen and have noticed that many people have the mistaken impression that it was open all day and night, but it was not. It was open from 7 p.m. to midnight Monday through Saturday, and on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.
I love that photo above, where did you find it? In addition to the two sailors, it appears there are two others lurking in the shadows of the doorway. If one’s mind is prone to a little imagination, the photo also conjures up a few chuckles as to what they’re doing! Heh!
Hey Martin, I was under the impression it opened earlier than 7pm on weeknights. Like maybe 4pm or 5? I think I remember reading somewhere that there were two shifts per night for the volunteers, which may not have been necessary for the were only open 5 hours a night. On the other hand, I could be completely wrong about that! I’m not sure now, but I think I found it on Pinterest. Now that I look super closely, I see you might be right. There might be two extra pairs of legs lurking in the shadows. All in all, it does make you wonder what on earth they’re all doing!
