Pantages Theater marquee, Hollywood Blvd, 1931

Pantages Theater marquee, Hollywood Blvd, 1931Here’s heck of a program for you – “Tarnished Lady” starring Tallulah Bankhead and a Mickey Mouse cartoon. But what really had me puzzled about this Pantages marquee was “Fanchon & Marco’s hilarious All At Sea idea.” I’d never heard of Fanchon & Marco so I did some googling and found they were a brother and sister producing team who provided the live shows that accompanied Fox pictures from 1929 to 1933. The show changed each week, and each one had a different theme, which was called an “idea.” Fox provided the Orchestra, the leader, the MC, the organist, a resident all-female dancing chorus named the “Sunkist Beauties,” the stage and the lighting, and Fanchon & Marco provided the weekly acts, the scenery, the costumes, and the orchestrations and played four shows a day, seven days a week.
